A rainbow is the result of a prism effect. A prism is an object that refract light. If you shine white light into a prism, you will see 7 colours.Rainbow work in much the same way, but instead of glass its colours are produced by rain. The reason why a rainbow appears circular is because that light is bent across the sky (remember, earth is round).~^^
