Coffee concerns
Q. I’m pregnant – is it
safe to enjoy a couple of cups of coffee every day?
A. It’s a case of enjoying a little of what you fancy - but not a lot. New
research shows that women who drink three or more cups of coffee a day during
pregnancy double their risk of miscarriage. The official recommendation for
pregnant women is no more than 200 mg of caffeine per day – which is not hard to
achieve when you realise that is how much caffeine is found in just one
Starbucks “tall” serving (around 325 ml).
If you eat or drink other caffeine-containing beverages and foods as
well, such as tea, energy drinks and chocolate, it’s very easy to exceed this
limit. Given that caffeine also has a negative effect on your body’s ability to
absorb calcium, you would be wise to switch to decaffeinated coffee. Modern
decaffeination processes use water, rather than the toxic solvent chemicals
that were once used.
